What is Sona Cocina?
Welcome to Sona Cocina, a Puerto Rican and Irish Restaurant! We are family owned and located in Poughkeepsie, New York. Our food is inspired by old family recipes. We have combined these cultures into a unique blend of food and drinks. Sona Cocina is focused on bringing the community together into one, big family atmosphere. We will be connecting with local performers and artists to come share their talents while you enjoy the taste of a home-cooked meal. We want to share our passion for food and the community here.
Our Logo
For the logo, I wanted to create a brand that combined both of the art styles you see in each of those regions. The name Sona Cocina translates to "Happy Kitchen." Sona means Happy in Gaelic, and Cocina means Kitchen in Spanish.
The flower in the logo is the flor de maga, which is the flower of Puerto Rico. It is surrounded by a Celtic knot. The logo consists of the bright colors that you would see down the streets in Old San Juan, while still having a traditional Irish look and feel. The font used is called "Milestone." It is a fun, yet classy style.
Interior Restaurant Floorplan
The space is designed as a pub/restaurant. I kept the floors and counters dark wood, which is commonly seen throughout pubs in Dublin. The dark colors create a calm ambience for customers.
The pops of color that are seen in the tables and seats are popular in many restaurants in Puerto Rico. It is complimentary to the dark wood.
Half of the restaurant has more of a pub feel including a stage for potential live performances. The other half has more tables for a full dine-in experience, while still having full access to the bar and stage. The back left has a full kitchen area with plenty of storage.
Our Founder and Owner
My name is Zoe Estrada. I am a Graphic Design major with a double concentration in Web and Print Design and a minor in Advertising at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey. When given the opportunity to create a thesis project of my own, I thought about things that had shaped me as a person. I come from a Puerto Rican and Irish family. Two totally different backgrounds that somehow worked well together and had a lot in common. The more I thought about my cultures the more I circled back to food and how important it is to each culture. I decided to create a restaurant that blends both of my ethnicities.
This was a very personal project for me, because it helped me regain my roots (and love for food). I would like to thank all my professors for their help and guidance. I would not be where I am right now without them. Most importantly, I would like to thank and acknowledge my family. They have always been there for me and helped me learn about my backgrounds in ways I could not imagine. This project would have never come to life without their influence.
